Dr. Baban S. Thawkar is an academician, researcher, and recognized postgraduate guide in the field of Pharmacology, with expertise in Neuropharmacology, Neuroinflammation, and Neurodegenerative Disorders. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from SVKM's NMIMS University, Mumbai. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded a Doctoral Research Fellowship by NMIMS University (2017-2021) in recognition of his research contributions. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, depression, epilepsy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic encephalopathy, and hepatic encephalopathy, with particular emphasis on microglial activation, P2X7 receptor signalling, NLRP3 inflammasome pathways, and gut-brain axis dysfunction
Dr. Thawkar utilizes rodent and zebrafish models to investigate disease pathogenesis and evaluate novel neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory therapeutic strategies. He has published extensively in reputed international journals and serves as a reviewer for leading journals including Aquatic Toxicology, Heliyon, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Journal of Neuroimmunology, Journal of Neurorestoratology, Journal of Molecular Neuroscience, Metabolic Brain Disease, Neurochemical Research, and Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.
He has significant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, having taught Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Clinical pharmacy, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, and Pharmacological and Toxicological Screening Methods. He is a recognized M.Pharm. teacher and research guide under the University of Mumbai, under whose mentorship seven postgraduate students have successfully completed their M.Pharm. degrees, while nine students are currently pursuing their postgraduate research.
In addition to his academic and research contributions, Dr. Thawkar has served as In-Charge of the Animal House Facility and Secretary of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) constituted under the guidelines of CCSEA, Government of India. His contributions to teaching, research, mentorship, and ethical preclinical research continue to advance pharmaceutical education and neuroscientific research.
